![]() ![]() It seems likely that Diogenes was also enrolled into the banking business aiding his father. Nothing is known about his early life except that his father Hicesias was a banker. All we have is a number of anecdotes concerning his life and sayings attributed to him in a number of scattered classical sources.ĭiogenes was born in the Greek colony of Sinope on the south coast of the Black Sea, in either 412 BC or 404 BCE. None of Diogenes' many writings has survived, but details of his life come in the form of anecdotes (chreia), especially from Diogenes Laërtius, in his book Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers. There he passed his philosophy of Cynicism to Crates, who taught it to Zeno of Citium, who fashioned it into the school of Stoicism, one of the most enduring schools of Greek philosophy. ![]() Diogenes was also responsible for publicly mocking Alexander the Great.Īfter being captured by pirates and sold into slavery, Diogenes eventually settled in Corinth. He embarrassed Plato, disputed his interpretation of Socrates and sabotaged his lectures. He became notorious for his philosophical stunts such as carrying a lamp in the daytime, claiming to be looking for an honest man. He begged for a living and slept in a large ceramic jar in the marketplace. There are many tales about him dogging Antisthenes' footsteps and becoming his faithful hound. He used his simple lifestyle and behaviour to criticise the social values and institutions of what he saw as a corrupt society. He believed that virtue was better revealed in action than in theory. Diogenes modelled himself on the example of Hercules. After being exiled, he moved to Athens to debunk cultural conventions. His father minted coins for a living, and when Diogenes took to debasement of currency, he was banished from Sinope. Also known as Diogenes the Cynic (Ancient Greek: Διογένης ὁ Κυνικός, Diogenēs ho Kunikos), he was born in Sinope (modern-day Sinop, Turkey), an Ionian colony on the Black Sea, in 412 or 404 BCE and died at Corinth in 323 BCE.ĭiogenes of Sinope was a controversial figure. Aelian, Aesop, Aulus Gellius, Apuleius, Athenaeus, Augustine, Basil of Caesarea, Clement, Cicero, Dio Chrysostom, Diogenes Laertius, Epictetus, Greek Anthology, Julian, Lucian, Marcus Aurelius, Origen, Philostratus, Plutarch, Seneca, Socrates Scholasticus, Strabo, Tertullianĭiogenes of Sinope (Greek: Διογένης ὁ Σινωπεύς, Diogenēs ho Sinōpeus) was a Greek philosopher and one of the founders of Cynic philosophy. The objective is to provide as much background information on the excerpts as possible. The excerpts are a little longer than given in most similar books. ![]() Using actual primary sources, this book allows the student and the scholar to use open-source texts to reconstruct the personhood of Diogenes of Sinope. We possess a faint idea of who the man was, and this book is meant to provide the raw material for the study of Diogenes and how his life and legacy shifted throughout the centuries. Over time, Diogenes’ legacy became intermingled with legends about his life which makes it difficult for the scholar to reconstruct who exactly the “real” Diogenes was. We possess no direct writings from Diogenes himself, thus his legacy has been left for others to construct and discuss over the centuries. A MEETING BETWEEN ALEXANDER AND PHILOSOPHER DIOGENES In early fourth century BC was born, Antisthenes, – the founder of the School of Cynics He was a faithful disciple of Socrates.Diogenes of Sinope is undoubtedly the most well-known Cynic philosopher from antiquity.

From backlit tern chicks at sunrise to wild horses in no light, the software improved them all. ![]() I increased the difficulty, adding in lower-light or more out-of-focus motion blur images as I went. The software made quick work of them, and the Autopilot feature snapped them up hungrily to produce very pleasant results. These are likely your everyday types of common issues. I started easy with photographs that were slightly noisy or a touch out of focus. I wanted a good selection of issues to see how Topaz Photo AI would perform. I also grabbed a few newer images that could use a little sprucing up. I dug up some of my sad, old low-light wildlife photographs full of every kind of noise and blur. When approaching testing software that fixes image quality, I really go hard. Plus, with having all three pieces of software in one, it does all three processes in less than the time it would take to do one before! Saving time in our busy days is always welcome. This is truly modern software at your fingertips.Īnother nice update is that Topaz Photo AI definitely feels faster as it runs the settings over my photograph and exports the image to my hard drive. ![]() The software also detects the subject and will approach that area differently than the negative space or flat areas. It doesn’t just increase edge contrast, but actually picks apart your pixels and organizes them for you based on the cause of the issues. It is cool to see it run over the image and detect the cause of blur, like missed focus or motion, and then fix it. Topaz Photo AI can pick apart the noise or blur in high detail and creates new pixels to replace the noise to match the actual photograph contents. This smart programming learns from the photograph, and after being tested on millions of images, it understands complex textures like fur, hair, and foliage and how it should affect those areas. The neat thing about Topaz software is that it uses artificial intelligence. I found it to be surprisingly accurate and rarely had to tweak any adjustments. A green mark shows you the recommended settings. It loads up the changes, and you can use sliders to adjust the strength. It can tell if your image has motion blur, lens blur, or noise and what type. When you load up an image, Topaz Photo AI analyzes it and tells you what it needs, then applies the necessary changes automatically. ![]() If that wasn’t big enough, they also added a new feature called Autopilot. Now, instead of bouncing between the three, you can do it all in one. ![]() With Topaz Photo AI, three apps have been combined into one to help us all save time in our post-processing workflow. DeNoise AI, Sharpen AI, and Gigapixel AI? They also have sales on upgrades and standalone products if you just want one app. The popular Image Quality Bundle is on sale for $159 (this one is usually $458.97), which has Topaz Photo AI, DeNoise AI, Sharpen AI, and Gigapixel AI. Well, the release of Topaz Photo AI was a perfect time to dig into some of those older photos as well as a few new ones with noise, motion blur, and more to see just what this app can do.īefore I dive in, it's worth noting there's currently big Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale available on the Topaz Labs website. You can get the Everything Bundle for $279 (it is usually $757.97), which includes Topaz Photo AI, DeNoise AI, Sharpen AI, Gigapixel AI, and Topaz Video AI. I photographed it, but the light was so low that the image quality and exposure were just not good. It was blue hour, and one bear suddenly leapt into action when fishing for salmon and raced through the water. A special moment years ago, I was in Alaska photographing the coastal brown bears. The light goes, but the horses are still sparring. Other times, I have been photographing wild horses at sunset, and the action picks up as they fight over territory. I have photographed animals during a snowstorm when the sky is completely overcast, and the bright snow and dark subjects and backgrounds really challenge your camera. As a wildlife photographer, some amazing moments happen when the light is just not there. If you’re familiar with a prior article that I wrote on " How to Improve Your Wildlife Photography with the Topaz Image Quality Bundle," you may recall that I have been using DeNoise in my workflow for years. ![]() This produces a dumbbell shape in the axial plane and the thin plate of bone acts as a stress riser that fails under excessive axial load. The olecranon and coronoid fossae form the centre of this triangle, with a thin area of bone proximal to the condylar masses and between the supracondylar pillars. The distal humerus is roughly triangular in the coronal plane, with a base formed by the transverse condylar masses (lateral epicondyle, capitellum, trochlear and medial epicondyle) and the sides formed by the medial and lateral supracondylar ridges. ![]() Īn appreciation of the morphology of the distal humerus is necessary to understand the high incidence of fractures in this region. Flexion type injuries are far less common, accounting for 1–3%, and open fractures are also rare, occurring in approximately 1% and more frequently in the older child. And falls from play equipment are frequently implicated. There is a higher incidence of injury over weekends and during the summer months. This produces an extension type fracture, which accounts for 97–99% of injuries and may be influenced by the ligamentous laxity that is common in this age group, predisposing to elbow hyper-extension. The mechanism of injury is usually a fall onto an outstretched hand, with axial transmission of body weight through the maximally extended elbow. This injury is reported to be more common in males but there is a lack of consensus, some reports indicating a higher incidence in females and a recent evaluation of a cohort of > 63,000 children over a five year period did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference. The median age of presentation is six years, and the incidence gradually reduces with age until age 15, when patients tend to present with an adult pattern. Supracondylar fractures of the distal humerus account for approximately 15% of all paediatric fractures.
